I fixed my problem by giving up on hplip, and instead configuring
the printer as a Generic PCL5e compatible printer using the
“gutenprint-ijs-simplified” driver provided by foomatic. With this
generic driver the duplex feature works just fine for me, and I think
printing may even be slightly faster. (You might be losing on some of
the fancy resolution-enhancing features though — I’m not sure).
